DANIELLE N. CHOI

Danielle N. Choi is a landscape architect, writer, and educator. Her research explores landscape design as a cultural practice that brings technology, infrastructure, and ecology into dialogue with public life. She currently teaches at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Prior to her academic appointment, Choi practiced in landscape studios in New York City and Berlin.

Consultant to Merritt Chase

Landscape architects Merritt Chase are leading the long-term transformation of Monument Circle into a pedestrian-oriented landscape. As a design research consultant, I contextualized the present day landscape in two centuries of landscape change: transitions in vegetation, the interplay between urban mobility and surface materials—and the causes and public reception of these spatial and material changes over time. This work serves several purposes as the design process unfolds over the next several years: to inform design decisions, to demonstrate to the public how the landscape around an iconic monument has changed over time, and to situate a local landmark in a global context of urban form.

ABC No Rio is a Lower East Side center of art and activism. A new building, designed by Paul Castrucci Architects, will become the home for this long-running community institution. The landscape designer’s role was to provide early technical drawings in support of the approvals process, rather than attempt to insert a singular vision in a community space.
